Maggot

So magependragon has offered to host a DnD 4e session to introduce us to the system. I have to admit, I am not very fond of the new 4e system, but I'm having a go at it. Like they say, don't judge a book by its cover.
I decided for this one or two sessions I'll revive one of my favorite characters from the past, Maggot, a gnomish Fighter/Rogue from 3.5e. After going through the rules, I decided that barbarian would fit him better this time round. This character came to me after reading a lot of Deadpool comics, and the result was, as I said, one of the best characters I've ever played (in terms of fun, not so much efficiency). Pen asked for a bit of a history, and this is what I came up with:

Maggot's head still spun as he stood up. The world twirled around and he staggered about like a drunkard. He started laughing, "What a rush!" he exclaimed. He fell on his back again, still laughing. A blurred figure stood over him. "I know you said don't touch, Torch, but you HAVE To try it!" His vision started to clear, and he stared into the beady eyes of a half man, half dragon. "Fuck me! You're even uglier than Torch!" he screamed as he punched the thing in the face.
The dragonman took a step back grabbing his face, "Ow! Why'd you do that?"
Maggot, already on his feet wielding his great cleaver, realizes that he doesn't know where the hell he is, "Where's Torch and the others?!?"
"Who?"
Maggot swung his cleaver through the air, "Where am I?"
"Sharn, in Breland!" said the dragonman worriedly.
"Really? Never heard of it." Maggot pondered for a bit, "Do you have dogs here?"
"Dogs?"
"DO YOU HAVE DOGS? YES OR NO?!?"
"Yes, we do, but..."
Maggot put his cleaver back to sleep on his back, patting it before letting it go completely, "Soon," he said under his breath, "very soon..."
"Sir?"
"Yes?"
The dragonman didn't know what to say to the strange little gnome, and silence fell over the two.
"Awkward!" Maggot sang in a high pitched voice, "If there is nothing else, I'll be leaving."
The dragonman's mouth hung open in shock as the gnome walked off in a random direction.

  1. Awesome! Can definitely get the Deadpool vibe and can imagine how fun he'd be to play.

My personal position on 4e is that it's a good system, just not as good as what came immediately before it--which gives it a much more negative reputation than I think it would have had if it had come before 3.5 or Pathfinder.

4e I do find to be very easy for pick-up-and-play style of gaming, easy on the players and DM and well suited to the irregular and brief sessions I have to get by on. But if you have time for a really serious campaign with deep investment from the players then 4e would not be my first choice for that campaign.
